B.C Climate Action Tax Credit Payment Dates Jul. 2024

British Columbia is one of the provinces that are excluded from the federal carbon tax rebate (CAIP).

As a B.C. resident, you will get your carbon tax rebate under the B.C climate action tax credit program.

This post covers the B.C. climate action tax credit payment dates for 2024 including the payment amounts, increase, eligibility and more.

B.C Climate Action Tax Credit Payment Dates 2024

The B.C. climate action tax credit is administered quarterly together with the federal goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST).

The payment is usually released on the fifth of each January, April, July and October.

But if the fifth falls on a weekend or a public holiday, the credit will be administered on the last business day before the weekend or public holiday.

Accordingly, the following are the B.C. climate action tax credit payment dates for 2024 and their current status.

QuarterPayment DatePayment Status
1st QuarterJanuary 5, 2024Paid
2nd QuarterApril 5, 2024Paid
3rd Quarter July 5, 2024Upcoming
4th QuarterOctober 4, 2024Pending

How fast you receive your payment from the above dates depends on the method you choose to receive the credit.

If you set up direct deposit, you can get your deposit on or before the official payment date depending on your bank.

A cheque deposit can take up to three business days to arrive at your address.

But generally, you should receive your tax credit within 10 business days from the day the payment was released.

If you don’t receive the payment within 10 business days, contact the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) which administers the payment on behalf of the B.C. government.

Recently, some people started receiving the carbon tax rebate with the description “Canada Fed“. Learn more about other benefits administered as Canada Fed here.

Not everyone receives the B.C. climate action tax credit quarterly. You will only receive the credit quarterly if your entitled credit amount is above $40. If the amount is below $40, you will receive a one-time payment in July.

What is the B.C Climate Action Tax Credit?

The B.C. climate action tax credit (BCCATC) is a tax-free rebate administered by the Canada Revenue Agency on behalf of the B.C government.

The credit is combined with GST/HST credit and paid quarterly to eligible recipients.

As with other provincial carbon tax rebates, BCCATC seeks to offset the cost of carbon tax in British Columbia for individuals and families.

The credit is regulated by the British Columbia Climate Action Tax Credit Regulation and it’s reviewed every July to account for inflation.

How Much is the B.C Climate Action Tax Credit?

Not every BCCATC recipient gets the same credit amount.

The amount you get depends on your family structure and adjusted family net income (AFNI).

Below are the maximum BCCATC amounts for the July 2023 to June 2024 benefit year:

Category Maximum BCCATC Amount
Single $447
Spouse, common-law partner or first child in a single-parent family$223.50
Each child (excluding the first child in a single-parent family)$111.50

To get the maximum BCCATC amount as an individual, your adjusted family net income for the 2022 tax year must be below the income threshold of $39,115.

  • If your adjusted family net income exceeds $39,115, your BCCATC amount will be reduced by 2%.

For families, the income threshold is $50,170 for the 2022 tax year.

  • If your adjusted family net income exceeds $50,170, your credit will also be reduced by 2% depending on your family structure.

To get a reliable estimate of how much B.C carbon rebate you will get, use the CRA’s Child and Family Benefits Calculator.

You’re required to notify the CRA of the following changes:

  • Your marital status
  • Increase or reduction in the number of children in your care
  • Issue of payment to a deceased person
  • Your relocation

This will ensure you receive the entitled payments you deserve, and avoid getting overpaid which you must repay.

  • Notify the CRA immediately when you move out of B.C. to avoid receiving an overpayment that you must repay.

B. You have a spouse or common-law partner

  • Provide your spouse or common-law partner information on page 1 of your T1 Income Tax and Benefit Return including their social insurance number (SIN) and net income even if it’s zero.
